Bruges, Belgium
Bruges, Belgium is straight out of a fairytale and every bit the idealistic European charm I always dreamt it to be. The city is a medieval masterpiece full of enchanting canals, historic architecture, and cultural treasures creating a truly captivating travel experience. Wandering through cobbled streets I marveled at iconic landmarks such as the Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, each telling a story of the city's rich history.
Indulging in Bruges' culinary delights became a delightful part of the experience, with Belgian chocolates, waffles, and hearty Belgian beer awaiting at every turn. The Markt square, surrounded by cozy cafes and restaurants, is a hub for savoring traditional Flemish dishes in a charming setting. The city itself is rather small and you really don’t need more than a few days to explore it.
Culinary Delights
Eating in Belgium is a gastronomic delight that indulges the senses with a rich tapestry of flavors and culinary craftsmanship. From the world-renowned Belgian chocolates that melt in your mouth to the irresistible aroma of freshly baked waffles enjoyed at charming street-side stalls, the country is a haven for food enthusiasts. The vibrant food scene extends to bustling markets where local cheeses, artisanal bread, and seasonal produce tempt the taste buds. With its fusion of French finesse and hearty Belgian traditions, dining in Belgium is a journey that transcends mere sustenance, offering a culinary adventure that showcases the country's passion for exceptional food and drink.
When going to Belgium you absolutely should eat as much chocolate as possible (same rule applies to Switzerland but, that’s for a later dat). I tried at least six different chocolatiers in 48 hours but, my favorite was The Chocolate Line. Of course you absolutely have to get a waffle too. I was told by a local to go to House of Waffles as unlike some of the stands they make the waffles fresh as you order.
As you can imagine there are quiet a few places to get beer in Bruges but, my if your going to go anywhere you must go to 2be. They have the most beautiful view of the canals and an impressive collection of beer trinkets.
I will admit I was only in Bruges for two days so I was only able to eat a few restaurants but, the ones I did were spectacular. My recommendations include: Nieu Museum, Locale, De Pepermolen, and Verloren Hoek.
Cozy Accommodations
Since Bruges is such a tiny city it really doesn’t matter that much what area you stay in as everything is walkable. I actually stayed in Hotel Van Cleef and could not recommend it more. The staff was amazing and made me feel so welcome. The hotel itself is gorgeous and right on a canal. The hotel is a family run luxury boutique hotel. The interiors were actually designed and curated by a local woman who runs a small store inside the hotel who has the most impeccable taste. To be honest I don’t think I would stay anywhere else in Bruges so this is going be my only recommendation.
