Amsterdam, Netherlands
Like many others, I immediately fell in love with Amsterdam the minute I got there. Amsterdam captivates travelers with its unique blend of enchanting canals, tulip lined streets, historic charm, and a modern, progressive spirit. The city's iconic architecture, exemplified by slender canal houses and picturesque bridges, creates a postcard-perfect scenery that seems straight out of a fairytale. Amsterdam's rich cultural tapestry is woven through its world-renowned museums, such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, housing masterpieces that reflect the city's artistic legacy. The laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by the omnipresent bicycles and the leisurely pace of life along the waterways, inviting exploration by foot or bike (although personally I recommend walking unless you often commute by bike). Additionally, Amsterdam's liberal ethos contributes to a welcoming and open-minded environment, epitomized by its famous Red Light District and cannabis coffee shops. The city's vibrant street markets, diverse culinary scene, and the warm hospitality of its residents make Amsterdam one of my absolute favorite European destinations.
Culinary Delights
Amsterdam's food scene is a vibrant mosaic, reflecting the city's rich cultural diversity and culinary innovation. From street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, the Dutch capital offers a delightful journey for everyone.
On my last trip to Amsterdam my sister and I decided to try some of TikToks favorite places. It ended up being an all day food crawl that most people would be impressed or repulsed that we could do. The day started off with the famous cookies from Van Stapele Koekmakerij for breakfast (which were actually fantastic). Then we headed off to get Stroopwaffles at Van Wonderen Stroopwafels. They were good but we actually preferred the ones we ate prior at Lanksroon Bakery. Next stop was pancakes and unlike America the Dutch actually don’t eat them for breakfast. We went to the tiny but, amazing Upstairs Pancakes. (Just to note, this place only has six tables and is cash only) After that we took a shopping break and then resumed our food crawl with my personal favorite Dutch specialty frites. We ended up going to both Manneken Pis and Fabel Friet so we could decided which is better. Mannekin Pis was my sister’s favorite and Fabel Frites was mine. After that we decided it was time for a drink and toast at Chun. At this point we were pretty full but, decided to power on and head over to Foodhallen to try the bitterballs at De Ballenbar. I know what your thinking they must be almost done but we had two more stops to go. We then proceeded to get drinks at The Flying Dutchman and ended our night at the magnificent Michelin star restaurant The Duchess. (Which in my opinion is the best restaurant in Amsterdam besides De Kas of course) I know this food crawl my seem a little insane but, it really is a great way to experience the diverse options Amsterdam as to offer.
Cozy Accommodations
Unlike many other cities I really think there is only one neighborhood to stay in Amsterdam to have the ultimate experience. I will forever and always only stay in the Jordaan neighborhood.
The Jordaan neighborhood in Amsterdam is a picturesque and trendy district known for its charming narrow streets, historic architecture, and artistic ambiance. Originally a working-class area, the Jordaan has transformed into a bohemian enclave with a vibrant arts community, boutique shops, and cozy cafes. Strolling through its labyrinthine lanes, visitors encounter a delightful mix of galleries, vintage boutiques, and traditional Dutch brown cafes, providing a distinctive and authentic Amsterdam experience. The neighborhood's welcoming atmosphere, along with its proximity to popular attractions like the Anne Frank House and the Westerkerk, makes the Jordaan the ultimate neighborhood to stay in for maximum experience.
My hotel recommendations include: Pulitzer Amsterdam, The Dylan, The Hoxton Amsterdam, and Hotel Mercier.
